The friend in need (Luke 11:5-13) | back

And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves. Christ teaches them more about prayer. Christ explains to them that you wouldn't go to a friend in the middle of the night to borrow some food.

For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? A friend of mine has just arrived and I have nothing to feed him.

And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. The friend would tell you not to bother him so late at night because the doors are locked and family is sleeping. Don't bother me!

I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. I can tell you this, if he will not awake to give you food as a friend; if you keep knocking long enough, he will give you what you want just because of your persistence.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. The same is with prayer. Keep on asking and you will receive; keep on looking and you will find; keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Everyone who asks, receives; those who seek will find; and the door is open to everyone who knocks.

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Those of you that are fathers, if your son ask for a piece of bread will you give him a stone? If he ask for fish, do you give him a snake?

Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If he ask for an egg, do you give him a scorpion? Of course not!

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? And if even sinful persons like yourselves give your children what they need, don't you realize that your Heavenly Father will do at least as much, and give the Holy Spirit to those who ask of Him? Of course He will! He is your Heavenly Father and He loves you more that you can imagine.
