The great banquet (Luke 14:15-24) | back

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. A man that was present sitting at a dinner gathering exclaimed to Christ. "What a privilege it would be to get into the Kingdom of God!"

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many. Jesus answered him with this illustration. A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations.

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. When everything was prepared and ready, he sent out one of his servants to notify all the guests that it was time for them to arrive.

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. The invited guests all began to make excuses not to attend. One man said, I just bought a piece of ground and I must go and inspect it. He asked to be excused.

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. Another man said that he had just bought five pair of oxen and needed to try them out.

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. Another man said that he just got married and could not attend.

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. The servant returned and told his master about all the excuses the invited guests had made. His master was angry and told him to go into the streets and alleys of the city and to invite the beggars, crippled. lame, and the blind to the feast.

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. Even after inviting all these people, there was still more room.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. The master then told his servant to go into the country and urge anyone you find to come to the feast so that the house will be full.

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper. The master replied; not one of those I had invited first will get even the smallest taste of what I had prepared for them. And so it is with the Kingdom of God. Many are called of God, but so many just ignore His invitation.
