The great physician (Matthew 9:10-13) | back

And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. Jesus and the disciples were having dinner at Matthews house, there were many tax collectors and notorious swindlers there as guests. They just witnessed what Jesus had done and wanted to know more about this.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? Why does your teacher eat and associate with men like that? Remember that Christ hung with the sinners... That is the reason He was there, to bring the Word and salvation to sinners. Today Christians are so afraid to hang in the wrong crowds. So afraid to be around sinners because they have such little faith they feel they will go bad themselves. It is are job as Christians to testify and teach the sinners about the Word and true salvation. If you can't do that, what good are you to God?

But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Jesus explained that those who are well do not need a doctor. He wanted us to know that those who are spiritually dead are those who need the help. These are the lost and the sinners!

But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Christ wanted them to learn the meaning of this verse of scripture. It is not your sacrifices and gifts that God wants, it is your love and for you to be merciful. Jesus tells us that He has come to urge sinners back to God, not the self-righteous.
