Reasons To Study God's Word
Why study the Word? The Word is a discerner of thoughts. The Word of God is alive and powerful. It cuts between "soul" (your individual self), and "spirit" (the intellect of the soul which is your mind). It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. This is one reason many do not like to study, or hear the Word of God. It convicts many if they are doing wrong in God's eyes. They would rather listen to man, who always seems to smooth things over to make them feel more safe and righteous. Below are 20 Old and New Testament scriptures telling us why we should study God's Word.
Old Testament
1.) I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. (Psalm 119:15-16). We need to meditate in the Word and respect it's ways obeying God's law.
2.) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. (Hosea 4:6). My people are destroyed because they do not know Me. Your priests refuse to know Me, so I will refuse to recognize them as My priests. (Isaiah 28:7, Jeremiah 2:8, Malachi 2:7-8).
New Testament
3.) But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4) Christ would also use scripture to fight off Satan as another example to us. This scripture that Christ used "man shall not live by bread alone," is written in (Deuteronomy 8:3, Luke 4:4). Its not so much material things and the flesh that count, but rather spiritual awareness and righteous living that will make us right with God.
4.) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1). In the beginning (of the ages), was the Word (already pre-existent), and the Word (Christ), was with God, and the Word was God. Here "ages" refers to "eons," millions of years ago before anything existed. The Word (Logos), as well as the worlds were prepared by Him. (Hebrews 1:2, 11:3). However, the Word had no beginning. (1 John 1:1). We have seen and touched the Word of Life, Jesus Christ who was from the beginning. (Christ was the Word in the beginning). Just as God's elect were chosen in the beginning. (Psalm 90:2, Proverbs 8:23, Ephesians 1:4). Chosen before this world age. Who were the ones chosen at this time? Those who fought and stood against Satan in the first world age. (Again, God's elect). They were justified in the first earth age. (Romans 8:27-33). As the spoken word reveals the invisible thought, so the "Living Word" reveals the invisible God. (Implying personal presence and relation). "The Word was God." (Denotes the conception of God as Infinite, Eternal, Perfect, Almighty).
5.) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32). The truth in the Word will always set you free. Free from what? Free from the old law, traditions of men, false teachings, and ways of the world. Most important, "Free from being a slave to Satan."
6.) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (John 15:7). Here comes the condition. "If you remain in Jesus and His Words remain in you, you can ask for anything you want, and it will be granted." (Galatians 5:16, 1 John 3:22, 1 John 5:14). We can be sure that God will listen to us whenever we ask for anything in line with His will. (Ask for things of the spirit, or wisdom to help you in teaching His Word). "God loves that."
7.) For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:4). Everything written in the scriptures long ago were written to teach us and give us hope and encouragement. We need to wait patiently for the promises of God to be fulfilled. (Hebrews 10:35-36, 1 Peter 1:13).
8-14.) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11). Put on all God's armor to stand against all strategies and tricks of Satan. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12). We are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers of the unseen world. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13). The evil day when antichrist appears on the scene in real life. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness. (Ephesians 6:14). Again we are to take a stand and be ready with the full armor of God. (No need to run or fly away with false teachings). And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:15). Take the shoes of the spirit to speed you on as you preach the Good News of peace with God. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16). In every battle you will need "faith" as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17). You will need the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God.
15.) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7). No spirit of fear here, but a spirit of power. Sound mind is one who uses common sense. (If it doesn't make sense, then its not true).
16.) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15). Study God's Word and you will avoid deception. Be good workers; one who does not need to be ashamed and who "correctly" explains the Word of God. (Follow the subject and object when you dissect and teach the Word of God). Study to show thy self approved and all knowledge will come to you.
17.) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16). All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true. The truth will make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
18.) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God is like a double edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit. It will expose our innermost thoughts and desires. (Revelation 1:16), The sharp two edged sword represents the Word of God. The Word can cut deep into our soul and set people straight, or it can teach us and build us up.
19.) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22). Don't just hear the Word. Practice it and do the good things that it has taught you. "Faith without works is dead." Your good works is the only thing that will follow you to heaven. (Revelations 14:13).
20.) Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. (Revelation 1:3). If you read this prophecy aloud to the church, you will receive a special blessing from the Lord. Those who listen to it being read and do what it says will also be blessed. The time is near when all these things will come true.
